  15. and author of The Other America, the 1962 polemic that sparked
  16. the War on Poverty; of cancer; in Larchmont, N.Y. His study of
  17. Appalachian miners and California migrant workers convinced him
  18. that America's poor, "for reasons beyond their control, cannot
  19. help themselves" and were trapped in a "culture of poverty."
  20. Moved by The Other America, President Kennedy, three days before
  21. his death, commissioned the study that led to the Johnson
  22. Administration's Great Society programs.
